The Chabash Development and Health Initiative (CDHI) is a women-led national NGO registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC/IT/NO 85190) and operating across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.

CDHI works to empower individuals and communities to live healthy and productive lives through integrated interventions in health, nutrition, protection, WASH and livelihoods. The organization partners with international organizations and government agencies to deliver sustainable, community-driven solutions that strengthen local systems and promote equity.


Job Summary

The Agronomy Assistant will support the day-to-day implementation of crop production, climate-smart agriculture and agricultural extension activities under the WFP-supported Integrated Food System and Resilience Project in Jakusko LGA, Yobe State.

Working under the direct supervision of the Agronomy Officer, the successful candidate will assist with farmer mobilization, agricultural training, input distribution, demonstration plots, field monitoring and data collection.

The role involves working directly with smallholder farmers, Cash-for-Work beneficiaries and community structures to promote resilient agricultural practices and improve household food security.


Key Responsibilities

1. Field Mobilization & Group Formation

  • Support community outreach and mobilization activities.
  • Register and organize smallholder farmer groups, lead farmers and Cash-for-Work beneficiaries.
  • Support beneficiary engagement across target communities in Jakusko LGA.

2. Agricultural Extension & Training

  • Assist in setting up and facilitating Farmer Field Schools (FFS).
  • Support demonstration plots and community agricultural training sessions.
  • Assist with training on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), crop protection, soil management and post-harvest handling.

3. Agricultural Input Distribution

  • Support the registration and verification of beneficiaries.
  • Assist with transparent and orderly distribution of agricultural inputs.
  • Support distribution of certified seeds, organic fertilizers, tools and storage materials in line with WFP protocols.

4. Post-Harvest & Irrigation Monitoring

  • Conduct routine monitoring visits to post-harvest hubs and agro-processing centres.
  • Monitor solar-irrigated dry-season vegetable plots.
  • Identify technical challenges and support farmers in addressing routine agricultural issues.

5. Data Collection & Progress Tracking

  • Collect basic agricultural and beneficiary data.
  • Monitor crop development and demonstration plots.
  • Record attendance during extension activities.
  • Maintain accurate field activity records.
  • Submit regular updates and activity logs to the Agronomy Officer.

6. Community Liaison

  • Serve as a link between farming communities, extension volunteers and CDHI project management.
  • Respond to routine field-level queries.
  • Communicate community feedback and operational issues to the project team.

Who Can Apply?

This position is suitable for candidates with a background in Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science, General Agriculture or a related agricultural discipline, particularly those with practical experience working with farmers and rural communities.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science, General Agriculture or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of practical field experience in agricultural extension, crop production or community development projects.
  • Experience in humanitarian or development programmes, particularly in Northeast Nigeria, is preferred.

Technical Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA).
  • Knowledge of pest control and crop protection.
  • Understanding of vegetable gardening.
  • Knowledge of post-harvest handling techniques.

Community Engagement

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with smallholder farmers.
  • Experience engaging rural women and community-based organizations.
  • Ability to mobilize and work effectively with community groups.

Language Skills

  • Professional working proficiency in English.
  • Strong fluency in Hausa.
  • Knowledge of other local languages spoken in Yobe State is an advantage.

Core Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage rural communities.
  • Practical knowledge of agricultural seasons, crop types and farming systems in Yobe State.
  • Ability to collect, record and report accurate field data.
  • Ability to work effectively under field conditions.
  • Adaptability to changing field priorities.
  • Team-oriented approach.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Familiarity with MS Office applications.
  • Experience with digital data collection tools such as KoboToolbox is an advantage.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Adhere strictly to CDHI and WFP’s zero-tolerance policies on sexual exploitation, abuse and workplace harassment.
  • Inform farmers and community members that agricultural inputs, training and project support are free of charge and must never be exchanged for favours or sexual acts.
  • Help ensure that distribution points, demonstration plots and field sites are safe and accessible.
  • Protect women, adolescent girls and vulnerable individuals from harassment or intimidation.
  • Immediately report suspected or observed cases of sexual exploitation, abuse or harassment through designated confidential reporting channels.

  • Adhere to humanitarian principles, SPHERE standards and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) frameworks.
  • Maintain honesty, transparency and impartiality during beneficiary selection, input distribution and data collection.
  • Respect local customs, traditional leadership and community structures.
  • Comply with CDHI’s policies on code of conduct, anti-fraud, child protection and conflict-sensitive programming.
