The Chabash Development and Health Initiative (CDHI) is a women-led national NGO registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC/IT/NO 85190) and operating across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.
CDHI works to empower individuals and communities through integrated interventions in health, nutrition, protection, WASH and livelihoods, partnering with international organizations and government agencies to deliver sustainable, community-driven solutions.
Job Summary
The Gender Assistant will support the integration of gender equality, social inclusion and women’s empowerment across activities under the WFP-supported Integrated Food System and Resilience Project in Jakusko LGA, Yobe State.
Working under the supervision of the Gender Officer, the successful candidate will engage with community structures, women’s groups, Cash-for-Work beneficiaries and project teams to promote equitable access to project benefits and meaningful participation of women and vulnerable groups.
The role will also support the identification of gender-related barriers, women’s leadership, livelihood initiatives and the creation of safe and gender-sensitive conditions across project locations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Gender Mainstreaming
- Support the integration of gender-responsive approaches into project activities.
- Promote gender considerations in agricultural input distributions, Cash-for-Work activities and infrastructure projects.
- Support gender-sensitive approaches within agro-processing and livelihood activities.
2. Community Mobilization & Inclusion
- Facilitate community dialogues, focus group discussions and community meetings.
- Promote women’s participation and leadership in Project Management Committees (PMCs).
- Support women’s participation in farmer groups and other community structures.
- Encourage meaningful participation of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
3. Support for Women & Youth Initiatives
- Assist with training and capacity-building activities for women and youth.
- Support women and youth involved in post-harvest management and agro-processing.
- Support livelihood initiatives including poultry, fish farming and other income-generating activities.
4. Safe Infrastructure & Site Assessment
- Conduct routine monitoring visits to project sites.
- Assess construction sites, solar irrigation hubs, market stalls and other facilities from a gender and safety perspective.
- Promote safe working hours and appropriate working conditions.
- Consider childcare needs, adequate lighting and safe access for women and vulnerable participants.
5. GBV Risk Mitigation
- Work with project teams and relevant protection actors to identify gender-based violence and protection risks.
- Support GBV awareness activities.
- Promote safe, accessible and appropriate reporting and referral mechanisms.
- Support measures that protect women, adolescent girls and vulnerable groups.
6. Data Collection & Reporting
- Collect and maintain gender-disaggregated data.
- Document gender-related field observations and community feedback.
- Capture relevant success stories and lessons learned.
- Contribute to regular project reports and updates.
Who Can Apply?
This position is suitable for candidates with an academic background in Gender Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Development Studies or related disciplines, combined with practical experience working with communities, women, girls or vulnerable populations.
Candidates should be comfortable facilitating community discussions and working respectfully on sensitive gender and protection issues.

Qualifications & Experience
Education
Applicants should possess:
- Bachelor’s degree or HND in Gender Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Development Studies or a related field.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in gender mainstreaming, protection, social inclusion or related activities.
- Experience in community development or humanitarian projects is highly desirable.
- Experience working in Northeast Nigeria is an advantage.
Technical Knowledge
Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of:
- Gender equality and gender mainstreaming.
- Women’s empowerment.
- Social inclusion.
- GBV risk mitigation.
- Protection principles.
- Community development and food-security programming.
Community Engagement
- Experience facilitating focus group discussions.
- Experience conducting community outreach.
- Experience working directly with rural women and adolescent girls.
- Experience engaging marginalized and vulnerable groups.
Language Skills
- Professional working proficiency in English.
- Strong fluency in Hausa.
- Knowledge of additional local languages spoken in Yobe State is highly desirable.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Strictly adhere to CDHI and WFP zero-tolerance policies on sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment.
- Sensitize women, girls, beneficiaries and community members on PSEA principles.
- Clearly communicate that project assistance, services and employment opportunities are provided free of charge.
- Support safe and confidential feedback and grievance mechanisms.
- Ensure women and vulnerable community members understand available reporting channels.
- Promptly report suspected incidents through the appropriate organizational channels while maintaining confidentiality.
Compliance & Ethics
The successful candidate must:
- Adhere to humanitarian principles and Do-No-Harm standards.
- Apply WFP Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) principles.
- Ensure fair and non-discriminatory treatment of beneficiaries regardless of gender, age, disability or social background.
- Respect local customs, cultural values, traditional leadership and religious sensitivities.
- Promote safe and meaningful participation of women and vulnerable groups.
- Comply with CDHI policies on Child Safeguarding, Code of Conduct, Anti-Fraud/Anti-Corruption and Conflict of Interest.
