Job Summary
Terre des hommes Foundation (Tdh) is seeking a qualified Protection Officer to support the implementation of integrated protection programmes, including Child Protection (CP), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Community-Based Protection (CBP), and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) prevention and response.
The successful candidate will work closely with vulnerable children, adolescents, women, caregivers, and at-risk communities by providing case management, psychosocial support, community engagement, referrals, and coordination with government agencies and humanitarian partners. The role also contributes to programme quality, documentation, monitoring, and safeguarding while ensuring compliance with Tdh policies and international protection standards.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Implementation
- Support implementation of integrated Child Protection, MHPSS, Community-Based Protection, and SGBV activities.
- Identify protection risks affecting vulnerable populations.
- Deliver structured psychosocial support activities through Child Friendly Spaces, Youth Clubs, and other safe spaces.
- Support survivor-centred referrals for gender-based violence cases.
- Promote community-based protection mechanisms.
- Ensure safeguarding, accountability, inclusion, and protection mainstreaming.
- Support resilience-building and positive parenting activities.
- Report implementation challenges and recommend practical solutions.
Child Protection Case Management
- Identify children requiring protection services.
- Conduct child protection assessments.
- Develop and implement individual case plans.
- Carry out regular follow-up visits.
- Refer beneficiaries to health, education, legal, nutrition, and psychosocial services.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences.
- Maintain confidential case files.
- Ensure timely documentation using CPIMS+/Primero.
- Conduct safe case closure.
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)
- Plan and facilitate age-appropriate psychosocial support activities.
- Provide Psychological First Aid (PFA).
- Conduct supportive counselling within approved guidelines.
- Organise life skills, recreational, sports, arts, and resilience-building activities.
- Facilitate caregiver support groups.
- Identify and refer individuals requiring specialised mental health services.
- Promote inclusion and children’s participation.
Community Engagement
- Conduct awareness sessions on child protection and safeguarding.
- Strengthen community-based child protection mechanisms.
- Engage community volunteers, teachers, religious and traditional leaders.
- Promote community ownership of protection initiatives.
- Strengthen referral pathways.
Coordination and Reporting
- Coordinate with Education, Health, Nutrition, WASH, MEAL, and Logistics teams.
- Collaborate with government institutions and humanitarian partners.
- Collect programme data and prepare weekly and monthly reports.
- Document lessons learned and success stories.
- Support monitoring, evaluations, and accountability mechanisms.
Compliance
- Follow the Tdh Code of Conduct.
- Adhere to Child Safeguarding and PSEA policies.
- Maintain confidentiality and promote inclusion.
- Report safeguarding concerns through established channels.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Guidance and Counselling, Human Rights, Education, Public Health, Community Development, or another relevant social science discipline.
Required Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years’ professional experience implementing Child Protection and/or MHPSS programmes.
- Experience in Child Protection, Community-Based Protection, MHPSS, or SGBV programming.
- Experience conducting child protection case management.
- Experience facilitating psychosocial support activities.
- Experience working with children, adolescents, and caregivers.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary referral systems.
- Previous experience in North Central or Northeast Nigeria is an added advantage.
